MONDAY July 26th

Today was a short ride for us, only about 160 miles. We left Kendall, FL and headed to Cape Coral, FL on the gulf side of Florida. We took the scenic route that took us through the Everglades. On the way through, we took an air boat ride out into the glades. It was a lot of fun. Those boats can move at a pretty good clip. I posted a couple of videos from the boat on the Facebook page.

We had stopped at one place to find out it was going to be about a 40 minute wait until a boat went out, so we headed back the way we came to a place we had passed but there were a couple of police cars there with their lights going and all kind of trucks, so I had decided to go to the next one. So, we ended up there and found out why all the trucks and police. They were filming for the new series that is coming this fall called The Glades. We were there and saw it first!

We paid our money and went to the boat. Our guide was Victor and he was a regular comedian. He was constantly making jokes about people being eaten by alligators, or that we were at the start of the waking part of the tour (out in the middle of the glade) and everyone needed to get out and walk. He also had a lot of information about the glades. Did you know, I didn’t, that the Everglade is a big river that flows from north to south at the rate of about 100 feet a day (3 days to go the length of football field)? We saw two alligators, one he said was a male and the other a female. The female is territorial so she came out to meet us while the male just lay on the side of the canal. The female lays about 60 to 100 eggs and about 20 of those hatch and maybe 1 or 2 survive to adulthood. From there we made our way to the Saul’s home in Cape Coral. Mr. Saul, Mel, is Laurie’s uncle. He is a Army veteran, having retired from the Army. He is married to Alda. They are very nice and took good care of us.

Now we are just relaxing, watching some CSI (I think) and pretty much just wasting time until bedtime. Tomorrow we head north and east. The heat is still horrible as well as the humidity. We will be very happy to leave the humidity behind and then the heat.

Kind of a short update, but not much to talk about. Have a good night, sleep well and God bless.
